Yes, absolutely. JOIN builds its training plans for both heart rate monitor users and power meter users, so you can get full value from JOIN with just a HR monitor. That said, we do strongly recommend a power meter if you can — they have become quite affordable and give JOIN much more precise data to work with.
How does JOIN analyse my workouts if I don't have a power meter?
JOIN uses your heart rate data combined with your RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) feedback after each workout. Together, these give JOIN enough information to analyse your training load and adjust your plan accordingly.
How do I export a heart rate-based workout to my bike computer?
When exporting a workout to your bike computer, simply select the heart rate option instead of power. The steps are the same across platforms:
- Go to today’s training in JOIN
- Tap on the planned workout
- Tap the export button
- Select your device (Garmin, Wahoo, etc.)
- Choose Heart Rate as the metric and export

Can I switch between heart rate and power at any time?
Yes. You can choose heart rate or power each time you export a workout, so there is no need to commit to one permanently. If you upgrade to a power meter later, JOIN will automatically start using power data from that point on.
